Tapal (officially Barangay Tapal) is one of the 44 barangays constituting the municipality of Ubay, in the province of Bohol, Philippines.

The barangay's total land area is approximately 289.50[2] and has a population of 1,212[3] as of 2007. In the last 2010 National election, it has 686[4] registered voters.

Tapal has two known beaches, the Kalipay Beach and the Mendez Beach.

Barangay Tapal celebrates its annual fiesta every May 3 in honor of their patron saint.

Location

Located on the eastern of the municipality, barangay Tapal overlooks Lapinig Strait to the east. It is bounded by barangay Sentinela to the north, to the south by barangay Union and the west by barangay San Isidro . It has approximate distance of 7 km from the town center, Poblacion.

History

At first, the name of the place is barangay Candungao which from the Visayan word dungao which means to look through or to peep. The place serves as a window or entry point for the resident due to its proximity to the to the island municipality of Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, which is formerly named as Pitogo.

Later on, a wide controversy on the barangay occurred with regards to their taxes. Many residents refused to pay they tax obligations, particularly on their cedula or Community Tax Certificate. It was a direct obligation for every male population eighteen and above, to pay their cedula during the Spanish period. And it found that during that time, thet residents of barangay Candungao brought the least tax collections than any barangay in the municipality.

After the said incident, the former municipal council decided to rename the barangay and give the name Tapal which came from the Visayan word Tapal which means to patch or to fill. It is been a burden for the municipality fill out their unpaid tax obligations during that time. The name remained Tapal despite of its negative meaning.

There are seven puroks or units in the barangay manned by the elected kagawads including the Punong Barangay or Barangay chairman.
